**The original album art, an inverted American Flag with 52 stars (one for Puerto Rico, one for Washington D.C.), came in the midst of the turmoil of the first year of the COVID pandemic. Taylor meant it as a commentary on the state of our nation (if the album name didn't also give you a hint), as well as a friendly nod to Sly & the Family Stone's classic 1971 album There's A Riot Goin' On, However, just days before the album was announced (and after jackets were already printed), the imagery took on a much more sour meaning onceTaylor saw similar-looking inverted flags being flown by rioters during the Jan 6th Capitol Building attacks.
"In an instant, the cover felt totally inadequate and sort of childish, even. It was hard for me to imagine anyone having the bandwidth to pick up and listen to something covered in an American flag, because I certainly didn't.... The Flag came to seem insensitive and over privileged and dilettantish'', Taylor told Rolling Stone Country in an article earlier today.
A year after the attack, Taylor is seeing the value of the original artwork. After alluding to the backstory of the cover on social media earlier this month, he received overwhelming feedback from fans who wanted to see it released in its original form. This is both an opportunity for his fans to finally see HGM's original vision, while continuing to be a perfect gateway album for new fans alike.
As with most Hiss records, Taylor recruited a slew of accomplished musicians to help bring his sweeping folk-rock compositions to life, including regulars Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, Bon Iver), Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver, Flock of Dimes), Matt Douglas (The Mountain Goats) & James Wallace (William Tyler Band, Mount Moriah). Also along for the ride this album are Dawes brothers Taylor & Griffin Goldsmith & country legend Buddy Miller (accomplished artist in his own right, and featured performer w/ Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Johnny Cash, etc). The album came out originally in Summer of 2020, ending up on several Best-of-2020 lists including Mojo, Aquarium Drunkard, Uncut, Bon Iver's personal favorites, etc**
